Blog: A taste of what you may find on Maui

Free Wailuku Walking Tour

A few months ago I blogged about the Free Kihei Walking Tour. Owner Keith has since expanded his tours and has just started his Wailuku Walking Tour, or more specifically the Wailuku History and Street Murals Tour. I’ve been to Wailuku many times over the years, but usually just go specifically to a store or a restaurant, or the dentist for that matter. I’ve never done a tour. Sign me up!

As with the Kihei tour, many residents were checking out this new attraction. We talked about Wailuku’s history, looked at some different local architectural styles and then saw a number of murals.

The Wailuku Walking Tour went for about 90 minutes and was really interesting. Thank you Keith!

Small Town Big Art Project

Have you seen the murals in Wailuku? I’ve driven past some of them, but on closer inspection, there is some amazingly creative public art here. A number of years ago the County of Maui together with the Bailey House Museum received a grant to start the Small Town Big Art Project. The project showcases Maui themes by artists from around the world. It is an effort to revitalize this town.

Which mural is your favorite? This one is my favorite. As you drive by you see the purple sash, but up close there are so many details about Maui history. So cool.

Where to go in Wailuku?

There are a few gems in Wailuku. I love the Sabado Art Gallery on Main Street. This is Maui artist Philip Sabado’s art gallery. There are two other galleries on Maui, one in Wailea (check it out and say hi to Philip’s son Aaron who has some amazing artwork), and another at the Westin Nanea in Ka’anapali. I’ve taken a few water color classes with both Philip and Aaron, organized by Paper Garden in Wailea.

Looking for food? Check out the Wailuku Coffee Company, just a few stores down from the Sabado Art Gallery. 808 on Main serves up delicious meals (I’ve been for lunch).

Check out the Bailey House Museum and dive into Maui’s history. Be mindful of their hours.
