Here we are into December again – time to gather my list of Maui Christmas events for 2023.
What does your family enjoy about the holiday season? A few years ago I wrote about Hawaii holiday traditions. Did you know? The first Christian missionaries to come to the Kingdom of Hawaii were American. They arrived in 1822. As such holiday traditions are surprisingly similar to what you might be used to on the mainland.
If you are on Maui this season, here are some Maui Christmas events for you to check out
Dec 1-10 The Reluctant Elf at the Pro Arts Playhouse
Dec 9 Second Saturday at South Maui Gardens in Kihei
Dec 10 Maui Holiday Pops Orchestra with Kalani Pe’a at the MACC. We have tickets for this one and I can’t wait. Last year’s concert was fabulous
Dec 10, 17, 31 Sunset Jazz ~ how did I not know about this. Sundays at Maui Ku’ia Estate Chocolate Bar for those 21 and older. Jazz, chocolate and drinks. Wow. I need to check this out.
Dec 15-17 Nutcracker Sweets at Iao Theater ~ watch the kids perform excerpts of the Nutcracker etc
Dec 16 Kula Country Market at Kula Country Farms (my favorite farm stand) in upcountry Maui
Dec 17 Maui Choral Arts Association Sing Joy concert at St Anthony’s ~ I attended their spring concert, it was very down-to-earth, family-style, packed church, lots of fun.
Dec 17 Grand Wailea Tree Lighting Ceremony 6pm at main entrance ~ it’s been since before Covid that they did this. Last time we went, it was packed! Plan to park elsewhere and walk. Also, the Grand Wailea will be hosting a Holiday Marketplace in conjunction with the tree lighting from 4-8pm in the hotel lobby.
Dec 21~23 Free Holiday Movie Festival at the Iao Theater ~ yes, you saw that right, the Iao Theater is showing four classic movies for free. Book your tickets now.
Dec 22 Kihei Fourth Friday at Azeka Plaza
Dec 24 Santa arrives by Outrigger Canoe at Polo Beach (at the Fairmont Kea Lani)
Ongoing Holiday Events
Shops at Wailea ~ Free Photos with Santa with each canned good donation for the Maui Food Bank. Also check their schedule for weekly events such as a free Polynesian show, ukulele lessons, Lei po’o making etc.
Hui Holidays ~ Nov 17 ~ December 23 the Hui No’eau gift shop expands to include more one-of-a-kind handmade gifts from Maui artists and vendors. Shop local.
Maui Sunday Market ~ this is an ongoing weekly market with live music, food trucks and lots of local vendors
Have you scheduled your Christmas dinner?
Many restaurants are offering holiday dinners on December 25th ~ make sure you get your reservations early! You do also have the option to get your traditional holiday meal to go from local grocery stores Safeway, Foodland or Whole Foods (in Kahului). Make sure you pre-order. Personally, I would love to just do a picnic at one of the beach parks. We’ll see what we end up doing this year.
