A few months ago I started chatting with some visitors at the rink. They said their son had heard hockey from the restaurant across the street, and sure enough – it was hockey night in Kihei!
Of course, we don’t have ice hockey here. As I’ve written over the past years, we have oceanfront sunset hockey instead!

Our oldest got into hockey in fifth grade. Now, years later, he plays with the adult and rec leagues. He’s one of the goalies, and a pretty good one (in my unbiased mom opinion).
The adults play 3 seasons of hockey with summer season starting early June. It’s fun to watch them play, surreal to be playing on Maui really.
When is #HockeyNightInKihei?
In season hockey nights are Tuesday (adult league), Thursday (rec/35O) and Sunday (pick-up). Kids have practices and games late afternoon/early evening, with the adults playing after.
There are also two public skate nights at the rink (Fridays and Saturdays). Skate rentals are $10 (skates cannot leave the rink), but you can skate for free if you bring your own skates. The rink is run by hockey parent and player volunteers, so please be nice.
Recently the rink held an Ironman tournament. They had a good turnout. Five hours of intense hockey in the hot Kihei sun (88+F temps today), followed by loco mocos courtesy of a hockey parent who owns Maui Fresh Streatery foodtruck. I saw a number of participants go for a quick dip in the water between games. That’s one of the perks of an oceanfront rink!

Pick-up hockey
Can you play? Sure! Sunday night is pick-up hockey (for ages 16+). Check the Maui Hockey website for details. Drop-in cost is $5, sign a waiver, borrow some gear and give it a go. Note, please make sure you are appropriately dressed. You are playing on concrete, falls are a little different than on ice.
