Blog: A taste of what you may find on Maui

Where to exercise on vacation

I am told some people like to exercise on vacation. Some people like to exercise (I digress). But, it’s the new year. You may have made some new years resolutions regarding getting fit. Or maybe you just like to keep active. What are your options here on Maui?

The beauty of Hawaii is that it is warm and mainly sunny year-round. So while you can find a gym and work out, the outdoor exercise possibilities are endless.

Swimming

Lap swimming or water aerobics in the pool or at the beach, the choice is yours. Pre-Covid some of the condo complexes had special water aerobics times and instruction at designated pool times. We’ll see if that returns. You can also check out the Kihei Aquatic Center (free admission).

Jogging and walking

Were will the adventure take you? You’ll find South Kihei Road pretty busy for running, however you could run up some side streets and do some exploring. Wailea Alanui is a beautifully shaded road. Of course there is beach running – burn extra calories running on sand and enjoy the ocean view, let the ocean cool you off a little. Kamaole 1, 2 and 3 beaches are all interconnected if you come up onto the grassy right-of-ways in front of condos or on beach parks. Sugar Beach is a beautiful 5 mile stretch of beach in North Kihei. On the Kihei end it starts near Ululanis/Sugar Beach Bake Shop where you can get a treat before or after.

Tennis

If you are staying at either our Kamaole Sands or Maui Kamaole condos, you are welcome to use the tennis courts (sign ups are at respective front offices). We provide basic tennis rackets in those two condos for you to use. There are also 8 public tennis courts at Kalama Park – you just have to bring your own rackets and balls.

Cycling

There are a couple places you can rent bikes in Kihei, such as Boss Frogs and South Maui Bicycles. Please do be careful – there aren’t many designated bike paths so you are sharing the road with distracted drivers.

Basketball pickup

There are two public basketball courts at Kalama Park (next to the tennis courts). Many evenings and early weekend mornings you can find pick-up games. Bring your own ball.

Inline skating

The Kalama Park roller rink has resumed public skating. This is a County facility, run by Maui hockey parent volunteers. Public skate is most Friday and Saturday evenings, 5:30-9:30pm. Rentals available (however they cannot be taken out of the rink).

Maui hockey? Yes indeed. Most other evenings you can watch kids or adult hockey practices/games (from outside the rink please due to Covid restrictions). The next adult league hockey season begins January 17, 2022. Our oldest plays goalie for the adult league. I’ve got a few hockey related posts on this blog.

Gyms

Yes, there are gyms here on Maui. If you are staying at our Kamaole Sands condo, there is a small airconditioned exercise facility in the pool area. See signup sheet and ask about Covid restrictions.

Other options include

Public parks in Kihei

Kihei has two public parks with various athletic fields and playgrounds.

Kalama Park is located at approximately 1900 S Kihei Road and sits on 36 acres. There you will find soccer fields, a baseball diamond, tennis courts, basketball courts, an inline skating rink, a skate park (currently closed though that doesn’t seem to stop skateboarders), a sand volleyball court. Most afternoons you can find AA meetings at the park. There is a covered playground. Unfortunately there are numerous homeless individuals who hang out/live at the park.

South Maui Community Park is visible from the Piilani Hwy. To get there, turn off on Lipoa and turn left on Liloa. Mind the school zones – Kihei Elementary and Lokelani Intermediate Schools. There is a soccer field, baseball diamond, covered playground and an indoor basketball court (this opened just before Covid and I’m not sure it is currently open to the public). This park is 19 acres.
